7 Signs Your Murray Home Needs an Electrical Panel Upgrade

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home’s wiring — every circuit, outlet, and appliance runs through it. In many older Murray and Calloway County homes, that panel was sized for a 1970s household: a couple of TVs, a window AC unit, and not much else. Today that same panel may be feeding a heat pump, a microwave, a hot tub, an EV charger, and a home office full of electronics. When the panel can’t keep up, it lets you know.

1. Your breakers trip again and again

A breaker that trips occasionally is doing its job — protecting you from an overloaded circuit. But if you’re walking to the panel every week to flip the same breaker back on, the circuit is chronically overloaded or the breaker itself is wearing out. That’s a sign your panel doesn’t have enough capacity for how you actually live.

2. Lights flicker or dim when big appliances kick on

If your lights dip when the AC compressor, microwave, or well pump starts, your panel may be struggling to deliver steady voltage. Occasional dimming can be normal, but frequent or whole-house flickering points to an overworked panel, loose connections, or an undersized service.

3. The panel is warm, buzzing, or smells like burning plastic

This one is not a wait-and-see. A panel that feels warm to the touch, hums, or gives off a burning-plastic or fishy smell can mean wires are arcing or overheating behind the cover. Shut off the main breaker if you can do so safely and call a licensed electrician immediately — this is a genuine fire risk.

4. You still have a 60- or 100-amp service

Modern homes are generally built around 200-amp service. If your home has 60 or 100 amps, you’ll feel the ceiling fast when you add central air, a second oven, a hot tub, or an EV charger. Upgrading to 200 amps gives you the headroom to add what you want now and later.

5. You rely on power strips and extension cords

Too few circuits is a panel problem in disguise. If every room has a power strip daisy-chained to another power strip, you don’t just need more outlets — you likely need more circuits, which often means more panel capacity.

6. You have a known problem brand or fuse box

Federal Pacific (FPE) Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have well-documented failure histories and are flagged by many inspectors and insurers. Old screw-in fuse boxes are also a sign the service is decades behind code. If you have any of these, an upgrade is about safety, not just convenience.

7. You’re adding an EV charger, generator, or major appliance

Big additions — a Level 2 EV charger, a standby generator, a heat pump, a workshop — frequently require the capacity and breaker space only a panel upgrade can provide. It’s far cheaper to upgrade once than to keep patching an overtaxed panel.
